Governed by a city form of government, Pleasantville has a mayor and a seven-member City Council. The mayor serves a four-year term. One member of the City Council is elected at large while the other six are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis. The Pleasantville Public School District serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. There are four elementary schools (Leeds Avenue School, North Main Street School, South Main Street School, and Washington Avenue School), Pleasantville Middle School, and Pleasantville High School.Pleasantville is an Urban Enterprise Zone, which is an area that encourages economic growth and development. To encourage growth, the program offers incentives and tax concessions to businesses. Pleasantville has 160 Urban Enterprise Zone certified businesses which include such industries as real estate, childcare, florists, auto service, dining, grocery stores, pharmacies, and wholesale clubs.For those living in town, Pleasantville offers youth sports, an afterschool kids' club, a weight room, a boxing club, aerobics for senior citizens, and a summer camp program. Seasonal activities include a Black History basketball tournament, an Easter egg hunt, a kickball league, and an arts and crafts club for senior citizens and youngsters. Pleasantville is home to those who want the convenience of a big city without the urban issues that come with that big city. And like its name suggests, it prides itself on being a pleasant place to live and work.
